Research before the build.

A practical research library for AI, automation, healthcare operations, revenue systems, and emerging technology.

Abstract

Technology moves faster than most organizations can evaluate it. New models appear, APIs change, chips improve, workflows get redesigned, and new tools promise to eliminate entire categories of work. Research is useful when it reduces the distance between what is technically possible and what is economically sensible.

§1

Research questions

Every useful project starts with a question worth answering.

Research should narrow uncertainty before capital is committed.

Fig. 2 — The narrowing. Each question removes part of the range of outcomes before capital is committed. Illustrative; not to scale.

  1. 1Can this workflow be automated?Map each step, each decision, and who makes it today.
  2. 2Where does the data actually come from?Trace every field back to the system that writes it.
  3. 3What happens when systems disagree?List the conflicts and decide which source wins.
  4. 4Does AI reduce labor here, or simply move it somewhere else?Count the review, correction and exception work it creates.
  5. 5Commit capital, or stop. What survives the first four questions decides what gets built, if anything.

Subject shelves

Three subjects the library returns to.

Each figure shows where the research looks. Counts follow from the drawing itself.

Shelf 362.16 workflows · 5 handoffs
Scheduling Patient access Referral coordination Documentation Billing Revenue cycle

Healthcare operations

Healthcare is a recurring research area because the workflows are both complex and high-impact. Scheduling, patient access, referral coordination, documentation, billing, and revenue-cycle operations contain many points where better information flow could matter.

Shelf 658.85 tools · 20 handoffs

Revenue systems

Modern growth teams operate inside a stack of CRMs, enrichment platforms, messaging systems, analytics tools, and AI agents. Research looks at the handoffs between them and asks where automation can improve speed without destroying data quality.

Shelf 006.36 layers · 1 question
Real workflows what does it enable? Agents Retrieval systems Multimodal models Model inference Specialized AI chips Developer infrastructure

Emerging infrastructure

Model inference, specialized AI chips, retrieval systems, agents, multimodal models, and new developer infrastructure can change the economics of software. The useful question is what those improvements enable in real workflows.

§3

From report to prototype

Research should eventually touch reality.

The best findings become a prototype, a technical architecture, a product hypothesis, or a decision to stop building something that sounded better on paper than it behaved in practice.

Fig. 3 — Four exits from a finding. One of them is a decision not to build.

InputFinding
  • Prototype

Built quickly and run against real work.

  • Technical architecture

Systems, data flow and failure handling, written down before code.

  • Product hypothesis

A claim about demand, stated so it can be tested.

  • Stop building

It sounded better on paper than it behaved in practice. That counts as a finding.

Colophon
Set in Schibsted Grotesk, STIX Two Text and Courier Prime. Figures drawn in one ink; illustrative figures are marked.

Research earns its keep when it changes what gets built.

This is an editorial starting point, designed to grow with original articles, projects, research, tools, examples, and case studies specific to this property.
